About Ambroxan (10% in IPM)

Ambroxan (10% in IPM) is a pre-diluted form of the renowned ambergris-inspired aroma molecule, known for its soft, musky, woody-amber scent with a skin-like, diffusive warmth. Revered as one of the most versatile fixatives in modern perfumery, Ambroxan enhances longevity, adds projection, and gives a clean, radiant signature to both floral and woody compositions.

Diluted in IPM (Isopropyl Myristate), this version is perfect for oil-based perfumes, attars, roll-ons, body oils, and solid perfumes, offering effortless blending and elegant diffusion.

Olfactory Profile

SCENT DESCRIPTION : Ambroxan opens with a clean, dry warmth that feels almost mineral and slightly marine at first contact. As it settles, a rich woody-amber character emerges — smooth, powdery at the edges, and unmistakably skin-like. There is a softness to it that bridges the gap between a woody base and a clean musk. On skin, it deepens and personalizes, creating a scent that feels as though it belongs to the wearer.

Ambroxan (CAS 6790-58-5) is included on the IFRA positive list with no quantitative restriction across standard use categories under the 51st Amendment. It is not classified as a restricted or prohibited material.

⚠ Always confirm the latest IFRA amendment status directly at ifrafragrance.org before commercial formulation.

⚠ Ambroxan is a solid at room temperature. Always dissolve completely in a suitable solvent before adding to your formula.

Blending Guide

Method 1 — Direct Dissolution in Alcohol
Weigh your Ambroxan crystals and add them directly to your perfumers alcohol. Warm the alcohol gently to 40 to 50°C while stirring until fully dissolved. Allow to cool before adding other materials. Do not exceed 80°C as this may cause volatility loss.

Method 2 — Pre-Dilution in Carrier
Dissolve Ambroxan in a warm carrier such as DPG or IPM at a ratio of 10% Ambroxan to 90% carrier. This creates a ready-to-use liquid dilution that blends easily into both alcohol and oil-based formulas without heating. Ideal for formulators who work frequently with this material.

Method 3 — Attar and Oil Blending
In oil-based perfumery, melt Ambroxan crystals gently in a water bath and blend directly into your fixed oil or base attar while both are warm. Allow to cool slowly. The resulting blend will be smooth and homogenous.

BEST PAIRINGS

Iso E Super → Intensifies the woody radiance; creates a smooth, forest-skin effect
Hedione → Adds floral transparency and diffusion; lifts the composition
Galaxolide → Rounds out the musk profile; adds softness and clean warmth
Cashmeran → Contributes cashmere-like softness; creates a plush, enveloping base
Sandalwood EO → Adds creamy, milky depth; perfect for luxurious skin-scent bases
Vetiver EO → Earthy and smoky counterpoint; adds complexity and masculinity

AVOID

Avoid combining Ambroxan with high concentrations of phenolic materials such as Eugenol above 5% as the combination can produce harsh or medicinal undertones. At overall formula concentrations above 20%, Ambroxan may become cloying or headache-inducing for sensitive individuals.

Perfumer's Note

I have worked with Ambroxan in hundreds of formulas and it never stops surprising me. It is one of the few aroma chemicals that does not simply add a scent — it changes the character of everything around it. When I add even 1% to a woody oriental, the whole formula seems to breathe. There is an intimacy to it that I cannot fully explain rationally. It makes a fragrance feel lived-in, personal, and warm in a way that no other synthetic achieves quite so effortlessly. It is the material I reach for when a formula is technically correct but emotionally flat.

ADVANCED TIP : Try using Ambroxan at two different concentration tiers within the same formula — place 2% as part of your base accord for fixation, and add a separate 3 to 5% as a feature note in your heart. This layered approach creates a multi-dimensional amber presence that unfolds differently during the top, heart, and dry-down phases of the fragrance. Combine this with a small amount of Hedione at 5% to create a radiant, skin-transparent effect that makes the whole composition feel luminous and close to skin.

Safety & Storage

Physical State : White crystalline solid at room temperature; melts at approximately 74 to 76°C
Skin Safety : Generally safe at recommended concentrations; patch test advised for leave-on products at higher usage rates

Shelf Life : 3 to 5 years when stored correctly in sealed original container
Container : HDPE or glass container; keep tightly sealed to prevent contamination
