Lactic Acid
Lactic acid (INCI: LACTIC ACID; CAS 50-21-5) is one of the most scientifically validated and commercially versatile cosmetic actives available to formulators. As both a powerful alpha-hydroxy acid exfoliant and a key component of the skin\'s own Natural Moisturising Factor (NMF), it occupies a unique position among cosmetic ingredients: simultaneously removing dead surface cells while hydrating and conditioning the skin below. This dual action — exfoliating and moisturising in a single molecule — makes lactic acid irreplaceable in modern skin care formulation.
For Pakistani formulators, lactic acid addresses the nation\'s most commercially important skin concerns: hyperpigmentation (goray rang / nikhar), post-acne marks, roughness and uneven texture, and the desire for a brighter, more luminous complexion. Its relatively large molecular size compared to glycolic acid grants it a gentler penetration profile, making it the preferred AHA for sensitive or darker skin tones — a property of enormous relevance for Pakistan\'s largely Fitzpatrick III–VI consumer base.
Produced commercially through microbial fermentation of plant-derived sugars (primarily glucose from corn or beet) by Lactobacillus species, cosmetic-grade lactic acid is typically supplied at 88% concentration in water. The L-isomer is the biologically active form found both in human skin and in commercial cosmetic-grade material. Its mechanisms include desmosome weakening, NMF replenishment, and at higher concentrations, fibroblast stimulation for collagen synthesis.
Bio Shop™ stocks cosmetic-grade lactic acid (88% w/w) from established international manufacturers with traceable plant-fermentation supply chains. CoA documentation with assay percentage, heavy metals panel, and microbial limits available upon request. Available at bioshop.pk.
EU Cosmetics Regulation
Lactic acid falls under the AHA group in EU Reg. (EC) No 1223/2009 Annex III. SCCNFP precautionary guidance: ≤2.5% at pH ≥5 for consumer leave-on products. CIR Expert Panel and market practice support up to 10% at pH ≥3.5 with UV advisory labelling. Not prohibited (not in Annex II). Products must include SPF advisory above 0.5% AHA concentration.
FDA Status (USA)
Generally Recognised As Safe (GRAS) for food use under 21 CFR. Cosmetic guidance: up to 10% glycolic/lactic acids at pH ≥3.5 with Sunburn Alert advisory. Above 10% or pH <3.5 may be classified as drug rather than cosmetic. Non-sensitising at cosmetic levels per CIR Expert Panel (1998).
Pakistan DRAP
No specific restriction on lactic acid in cosmetic products under DRAP Cosmetics Rules 2005. Pakistani formulators have flexibility but are advised to follow EU/CIR safety parameters as best professional practice. Products at ≤10% pH ≥3.5 with SPF advisory are appropriate for domestic market.
Halal Status — Conditional
Lactic acid produced by bacterial fermentation (Lactobacillus species) of plant-derived sugars (corn glucose, beet sucrose, cassava starch) is fully halal — no pork-derived enzymes, no haram-source ethanol, no animal slaughter products in the process. Major halal bodies (JAKIM, IFANCA, HFA, Pakistan Halal Authority) confirm plant-fermentation origin as halal. Dairy-derived lactose feedstock requires separate halal verification. Bio Shop™ sources from plant-fermentation manufacturers with traceability documentation.
UV Sensitivity Advisory
AHAs including lactic acid temporarily increase UV sensitivity by removing protective stratum corneum layers. All AHA products must include SPF advisory: "Use broad-spectrum sunscreen daily when using this product." This is a skin response, not ingredient phototoxicity — lactic acid itself is not photosensitive or phototoxic.
Environmental & Biodegradability
Lactic acid is a naturally occurring organic acid produced by all living organisms during anaerobic metabolism. Readily biodegradable. No bioaccumulation concern. No aquatic toxicity at any relevant concentration. Environmentally benign — one of the most eco-friendly cosmetic actives available.
