Methyl Salicylate
Methyl 2-hydroxybenzoate · روغنِ ازفار
Methyl Salicylate — known worldwide as the scent of wintergreen — is the definitive dual-function aroma chemical: an intense sweet-minty fragrance molecule and a potent warming counterirritant. Called Roghan-e-Azfar (روغنِ ازفار) in Pakistan's Unani tradition, it anchors pain balms, sports gels, and oral care products across the subcontinent.
Methyl Salicylate
Methyl Salicylate is one of the most culturally familiar aroma chemicals globally, and its commercial success rests on a remarkable dual role: it is simultaneously one of the sharpest, most memorable fragrance molecules and one of the most potent topical warming agents available. For centuries, it has been extracted as "Oil of Wintergreen" from Gaultheria procumbens; today, 99% of the world's supply is synthetically manufactured via Fischer esterification of salicylic acid and methanol.
In Pakistan and South Asia, methyl salicylate holds special significance in Unani medicine as a key warming roghan (روغن — oil or balm), traditionally paired with camphor and menthol to create the iconic pain-relief preparations that span from urban sports recovery products to rural joint-care remedies. Its TRPV1-activating capability — the same mechanism that gives chilli peppers their burn — produces the characteristic warming, vasodilating, rubefacient sensation that distinguishes MS from cooling agents like menthol.
From a regulatory perspective, methyl salicylate's CMR Category 2 classification has led to strict EU concentration limits (0.06% in leave-on products, up to 0.6% in mouth rinses), reflecting its potency and the necessity for careful formulation in commercial products.
Pure synthetic grade ≥98%, colourless to pale yellow liquid. CoA and Halal documentation available at bioshop.pk. Ideal for cosmetic, fragrance, OTC pharmaceutical, and oral care formulations.

Compliance Profile
EU Annex III Entry 324
Restricted; specific concentration limits per product type. Leave-on: max 0.06%. Mouthwash: max 0.6%. Presence in Annex III reflects regulatory control due to CMR classification.
DRAP Pakistan
No specific restriction on methyl salicylate. Follow EU limits as best practice. Topical OTC analgesic claims (10–30% MS) fall under drug classification in Pakistan; pre-registration may be required for OTC claims.
CMR Category 2 (EU)
Suspected toxic for reproduction. Classification basis: animal studies; SCCS confirmed safe at cosmetic concentrations (≤0.06% leave-on). Not a concern in cosmetic use at regulated levels.
Skin Sensitiser 1B
Can cause allergic contact dermatitis. Patch test recommended for sensitive skin. Use concentrations below 0.06% for leave-on to minimise sensitisation risk.
Children Under 6
PROHIBITED in all products except toothpaste (EU rule). Follow as best practice everywhere. Strong warming sensation and rapid skin penetration make MS unsuitable for paediatric formulations.
Environmental
Biodegradable; natural component of plant emissions. Moderate aquatic toxicity. Not of significant environmental concern at typical cosmetic concentrations.
